Sailing

Sailing is one of the world’s oldest and popular sports. Learning sailing can be an incredible experience as it gives you the ability to get out there in the water and enjoy a stimulating yet relaxing freedom that no other sport offers.

However, just the prospect of getting started can be quite daunting; especially if you have never been into water sports. To make things easier for you, we’ve answered below some of the most frequently asked questions so you can have a better idea about whether sailing is your cup of tea, and if yes, then where you can learn it from.

Is sailing hard to learn?

After reading boating magazines and how-to books, you probably think sailing is hard. But in reality, it’s not. It is quite easy to learn sailing; any skilled instructor can teach you the basics in a day (hence the weekend and shorter courses). After 4-5 sessions, you will be confident enough to show off your skills in the water.

Is learning sailing worth it?

Definitely! Besides being so much fun, sailing is an invigorating and rewarding sport that broadens your horizon (quite literally). It’s a great activity that gives you a chance to spend some quality time with your family or relax all by yourself with the sea breeze. As sailing aficionados often say “sailing is more than a sport—it’s a lifestyle”.

Why is sailing good for you?

There are a number of benefits of learning how to sail:

  1. Sailing helps you relieve stress – it involves a lot of hard work, but once you get a hang of it, sailing can actually be a very relaxing time pass.

-Why should I learn how to sail?

As we discussed above, sailing has numerous benefits for both of your physical and mental health which is why you should learn how to do it. Apart from that, it’s a good time pass and social activity that you can undertake with a group of people (friends, family, and strangers) or solo, making it a versatile sport.

At what age can you start sailing?

The easy answer is 8 years. Yes, that’s right. Legally, you can start learning how to sail at the age of 8 years. However, children as young as 8 years should not be given charge of a whole yacht without adult supervision. You should wait till you are 18 years old to go sailing all by yourself.  Our school accepts ages 13 years or older.

Can I learn sailing by myself?

You can go through online tutorials and articles to get familiar with the basics of sailing, but for practical experience, it is best to enroll in a sailing school as they teach you how to navigate the sea (which you cannot really learn by yourself). Plus, it’s nice to have a safety blanket. Sailing clubs and academies have all the necessary equipment to keep you safe.

How do I get started in sailing?

Getting started is probably easier than you think. The first thing you need to do is research on the type of sailing that interests you and then enrolls in a beginner’s course. In this course, you will learn the basics of sailing, including the vocabulary.

After this, you can also join a Yacht or Dinghy club. Although this is not essential, it might make it easier for you to find people to learn and sail with. Go for a club that is not too expensive and has a few members, as this will help you learn better.  Contact our sailing school in Detroit by calling 586-770-2518 or contact us.

How much do sailing classes cost?

It depends on your interest. If you just want to try out sailing, then you can probably take 1 one-hour lesson that costs anywhere between $45-$75 (or maybe even less). However, if you want to truly learn how to sail, then you should look at other options.

There are both short and long courses for sailing. The shorter (or weekend) ones usually cost around $300, while the longer ones cost a lot more. But in the end, it all boils down to “you get what you pay for”. The more expensive the course is, the more comprehensive it will be.

Is sailing dangerous?

Sailing comes with its fair share of danger, but nothing in our lives is risk-free. We put ourselves in danger almost every when we decide to sit in a car, and the frequency of going sailing is significantly less than that.

Luckily, with the right training and equipment, you can reduce the danger involved in sailing to a great extent. It’s also a good idea to check the weather conditions and keep yourself prepared before you even head out in the sea.

Is sailing expensive?

Again, it depends on your interest. If you want to go sailing just for the thrill, then you can take those one-hour lessons occasionally that do not cost much. Similarly, a weekend or shorter course is not very costly either and so it will not put a dent in your pocket.

If you’re in it for real and want to actually learn how to sail all by yourself, then that be quite expensive. However, we can assure you that it will be worth it once you go out on the water and experience the relaxing freedom.

How long does it take to learn to sail a yacht?

It depends on the type of training program you choose. You can learn the basics in a day, but it can take as long as a month to learn sailing completely, be confident enough to go out on the waters and sail a yacht all by yourself. We recommend that you take your first few trips with your instructor before you go out on your own.

Where can I find the best sailing instructor?

To find the best sailing instructor, visit your local, or just simply search ‘the best sailing instructor in my area’ on Google. You will get a list of sailing schools and clubs near you and you can pick the one that is most suitable for you in terms of your budget and requirements.

American Sailing Association

The American Sailing Association is a group of sailors, sailing schools, and charter fleets. Our purpose is to bring organization and professional standards to the sailing industry. The association is dedicated to boating safety through education, to ensure that every sailor learns to sail properly and is able to prove the ability to sail. The heart of the ASA program is a comprehensive set of sailing standards, which are detailed in the ASA Sailing Log Book. These performance objectives allows sailors to be evaluated on their sailing knowledge and seamanship skills. But more importantly, through certification to these standards, the ASA provides the individual with a way to prove these abilities to rental and charter fleets throughout the country and around the world.https://www.youtube.com/embed/6kAlUNn16A4?controls=0&rel=0&playsinline=1&enablejsapi=1&origin=https%3A%2F%2Flakestclairsailingschool.com&widgetid=3
