🚨 Man Overboard Drill — Every Sailor Should Know This 🚨
A person overboard (MOB) situation is one of the most serious emergencies on the water. Fast, calm, and coordinated action can save a life. Here’s a simple, sailor-friendly summary you can keep in mind and share with your crew:
Immediate Actions (Y–T–P–S–C):
- Yell “Man Overboard!” to alert everyone
- Throw flotation (life ring, cushion, anything that floats)
- Point continuously so the person is never lost from sight
- Set the MOB mark on your GPS
- Call for help on VHF Channel 16 if needed
Getting Back to the Person:
- Keep eyes on the person in the water at all times
- Maneuver the boat in a controlled turn (often a figure-eight)
- Approach slowly and from upwind to maintain control
- Luff sails and reduce speed as you get close
Recovery & Safety:
- Attach a line or lifesling as soon as possible
- Turn the boat into the wind to stop and create shelter
- Bring the person aboard carefully and safely
Most Important Lesson:
Practice MOB drills regularly. When everyone knows their role, panic drops and safety rises.
⛵ Prepared crews save lives. Practice before you need it.
