Before Your Class
Cancellation, rescheduling, weather, refund, and gift-card terms are maintained on the school’s dedicated policy page so you can review the most current information before booking.
Please bring the following items for your comfort and preparation:
- Your textbook, study guides, and logbook if applicable
- Lunch for the break aboard the boat
- A refillable bottle of water
- Non-marking rubber-soled deck shoes—no flip-flops
- Comfortable layers for changing temperatures
- Foul-weather gear when conditions require it
- Sunscreen and lip protection
- Sunglasses with a secure strap
- A sun hat or baseball cap with a strap
- Sailing gloves
- Your own PFD if you prefer to use it
- Motion-sickness medication taken as directed before class
- Hand sanitizer
Our sailboats carry PFDs and required safety equipment. If you bring and wear your own PFD, keep it properly buckled while in use.
Yes. Read your assigned textbook, review the course knowledge and practical standards, and practice essential knots before class. Advance preparation allows you to spend more class time building skills on the water.

Exams & Retests
Continue practicing the required on-the-water skills, then return for another practical evaluation when you are ready.
Practical retest fee · $100Take time to review the course material carefully. Return within one month to retake the written examination. One additional written-test attempt is allowed.
Written retest fee · $25Study the course material, continue practicing the practical skills, and return within one month. You will have one additional written-test attempt and may schedule another practical evaluation.

The school is located at Lambrecht Marina, formerly Markley Marine: 31300 North River Road, Harrison Township, Michigan 48045, at Slip A3.
When you arrive at the guard shack, tell the attendant you are with Lake St. Clair Sailing School. The school is just to the left of the guard shack. Park in front of the marina office or along the seawall near the flag.
Gratuities are always at your discretion. A tip of 15–20% is customary when you feel your captain or instructor has provided an excellent sailing experience, and additional recognition for outstanding effort is appreciated.
The cockpit is an open-air area. Students should follow any health guidance provided before class and contact the school before arrival if they are ill. Additional precautions may be requested inside the sailboat cabin and head when circumstances require them.
Sailing safety instructions from the captain or instructor must be followed throughout the class or charter.
