Becoming an American Sailing instructor is not simply the next certificate in a logbook. It is a professional evaluation of your knowledge, boat handling and ability to help another person learn safely.
The strongest candidates arrive with dependable sailing skills, sound judgment and the patience to explain, demonstrate, observe and adapt. The Instructor Qualification Clinic confirms that you can do all four.

Do you have the foundation to teach well?
These are starting points, not guarantees of passing an IQC or receiving a teaching position.
18 or older
The minimum age currently listed for ASA keelboat instructor candidates.
Experienced sailor
At least three years for ASA eligibility; our teaching roles favor deeper experience.
ASA 101 level
Hold ASA 101 or be ready to challenge the student-level examination.
Clear communicator
Bring teaching experience or a demonstrated aptitude for explaining to beginners.
Standards-ready
Perform the knowledge and skills described in the ASA International Sailing Logbook.

ASA eligibility and school hiring are related—but different.
ASA credentials evaluate sailing and teaching proficiency. A school may set additional employment and professional-vessel requirements.
To enter the instructor pathway
Review the official criteria before choosing a clinic.
- Age 18 or older
- At least three years of sailing experience
- ASA 101 or ability to challenge the exam
- Teaching experience or communication aptitude
- Ability to perform to ASA logbook standards
To teach with our school
Our captain-instructors carry responsibility for students, passengers and the vessel.

The practical pathway
Five steps from experienced sailor to certified instructor.

Have a readiness conversation
Compare your sailing résumé, student certifications, teaching background and boat-handling confidence with the current standards.
Close credential gaps
Complete or challenge ASA 101 as needed. If you want to teach professionally with our school, begin the applicable USCG credential process early.
Choose and apply to an IQC
Review the official clinic schedule, contact the organizer, complete the required application and register by the stated deadline.
Prepare to be evaluated
Study the clinic package, refresh theory and single-handed boat handling, and practice teaching both classroom and on-water topics.
Complete the IQC and affiliate
After earning your instructor credential, teach through an active ASA-affiliated school when you want to certify students to ASA standards.
Inside the evaluation
The IQC measures more than how you sail.
At the first keelboat instructor level, candidates are evaluated across three core areas. Exact clinic formats can vary, so always review the current organizer’s material.
Knowledge and seamanship
Written evaluation of sailing theory, safety, seamanship and the knowledge expected of a professional instructor.
Teaching and communication
Structured classroom presentation and on-the-water teaching that demonstrate organization, clarity and adaptability.
Boat handling
Confident keelboat control, commonly including single-handed sailing, sail trim, reefing, anchoring and crew-overboard recovery.
Progressive credentials
Teach the level you have been qualified to instruct.
Instructor certification parallels the student pathway at a higher performance standard with an added emphasis on teaching.
Keelboat Sailing 1
The foundational instructor credential for teaching and evaluating the corresponding introductory keelboat curriculum through an affiliated school.
Coastal Cruising
Build on the first level to teach larger-boat systems, seamanship, maneuvering and cruising knowledge at the ASA 103 level.
Bareboat Cruising
Advance to the instructor credential aligned with multi-day bareboat cruising preparation and the ASA 104 curriculum.
