Basic Keelboat Sailing
Your formal sailing foundation. Learn sail theory, terminology, safety procedures, basic chart work, rules of the road, man-overboard recovery, and the core skills required to operate a keelboat with greater control and awareness.

Coastal Cruising
Move from making the boat sail to managing the practical realities of cruising. Build knowledge of auxiliary engines, required equipment, docking, anchoring, weather observation, heavy-weather procedures, basic coastal navigation, and cruising seamanship.

Accelerated option · Intensive format
ASA 101 + 103 Combination Class
Complete both foundational certifications in one focused two-day program. This format moves quickly and is best for prepared students who already have some sailing knowledge or practical ability and can complete the required study before arriving.

Bareboat Cruising
Prepare to take greater responsibility aboard a cruising sailboat. ASA 104 develops multi-day cruise planning, navigation, provisioning, anchoring, docking, boat systems, weather awareness, emergency procedures, and onboard living skills.

Friday Student Sailing Practice

Which sailing certification should a beginner take first?
Start with ASA 101 Basic Keelboat Sailing. No previous sailing experience is required. You will learn terminology, sail handling, safety, navigation rules, and essential on-water skills.
Where are the sailing classes held?
Classes are taught on Lake St. Clair from Lambrecht Marina at 31300 North River Road, Slip A3, Harrison Township, Michigan 48045. The location serves students throughout Metro Detroit and southeastern Michigan.
What is the difference between ASA 101 and ASA 103?
ASA 101 teaches keelboat fundamentals. ASA 103 builds on those skills with auxiliary engines, anchoring, weather, cruising equipment, navigation, docking, and additional seamanship. ASA 101 is the prerequisite for ASA 103.
Can I take ASA 101 and ASA 103 together?
Yes. The accelerated two-day combination class is intended for prepared students and moves quickly. Complete the required reading before class and contact the school if you are unsure whether the accelerated format matches your experience.
Does certification guarantee that a charter company will rent me a boat?
No. Certification helps document your training, but charter approval is determined by the operator. The company may review your sailing résumé, recent experience, destination, vessel size, and certifications.
How should I prepare before class?
Book early, read the required course textbook, review terminology and knots, and arrive ready to participate. Preparation allows more of your class time to be devoted to practical sailing skills.
