Charts & Navigation
Read position, depth, and aids to navigation with confidence.
A nautical chart tells you where you are, what lies beneath you, and how to move safely through marked channels.
Soundings
Water depth measured from chart datum, commonly Mean Lower Low Water. Check whether the chart uses feet, fathoms, or meters.
Fathoms
1 fathom = 6 feet. Always verify the sounding unit printed on the chart before calculating clearance.
Latitude
Horizontal parallels measure degrees north or south of the Equator.
Longitude
Vertical meridians measure degrees east or west of the Prime Meridian.
Distance on a chart
One degree of latitude equals 60 nautical miles. One minute of latitude equals one nautical mile. Measure distance against the latitude scale—not the longitude scale.
Boat Systems & Equipment
Know the parts of a cruising boat and the equipment that protects its crew.
Larger cruising sailboats introduce more onboard systems. Learn both the vocabulary and the purpose of each component.
Storage & interior
- Lazarette: aft storage compartment.
- Bilge: lowest interior area of the hull.
- Pulpits and lifelines: help keep crew aboard.
- Boarding: step aboard near amidships when possible.
Hull & steering
- Transom: surface forming the stern.
- Rudderpost: shaft connecting the rudder to steering.
- Through-hull: fitting allowing water to enter or exit.
- Binnacle: housing for the compass and often the wheel.
Safety on deck
A harness, tether, and jackline help keep a crew member secured to the boat in heavy weather or at night.
Protect the water
Never discharge oil, plastic, or packaging into the water. Follow all applicable pollution-prevention rules.
Lights & Rules of the Road
Recognize a vessel's aspect and make early, obvious decisions.
Navigation lights communicate a vessel's direction, operating condition, and relative position after dark or in restricted visibility.

Maintain a proper lookout
Every vessel must maintain a proper lookout by sight, hearing, and all available means appropriate to the conditions.
Act early and substantially
If risk of collision exists, take action that is large enough to be apparent to the other vessel.
Sailing vessels
When two sailboats meet, review tack and windward/leeward responsibilities. Avoid thinking of any vessel as having an absolute “right of way.”
Diving flags
The blue-and-white Alpha flag shows a vessel restricted by diving operations. A red flag with a white diagonal stripe warns that divers are in the water.
Anchoring, Docking & Towing
Control the boat at low speed and secure it to dependable strong points.
Good seamanship at anchor or alongside a dock begins with planning, communication, and knowing how forces will act on the boat.
Anchor rode
The line and/or chain connecting the anchor to the boat. All-chain rode performs well in demanding conditions; rope-and-chain is lighter to handle.
Bottom type
A fluke-style anchor such as a Danforth performs well in sand or soft mud. Match the anchor to the bottom.
Mooring approach
If you miss the pickup, do not force the maneuver. Circle back, reset the approach, and try again.
Spring lines & towing
Spring lines limit fore-and-aft movement at the dock. Attach a towline only to a strong, suitable point—not steering gear.
Overnight scope
Scope is the ratio of rode length to the vertical distance from the bow roller to the bottom. The original guide recommends 5:1 to 7:1 for overnight anchoring; conditions, equipment, and local guidance may require more.
Weather & Meteorology
Watch the trend, shorten sail early, and prepare before conditions arrive.
Coastal cruisers combine forecasts with observations of pressure, clouds, wind, visibility, and changing conditions.
Reefing
Reducing sail area helps maintain balance, stability, and control as wind increases. Reef early—before the boat becomes overpowered.
Marine forecast
Monitor official marine weather information, including NOAA Weather Radio channels available through your VHF radio.
Barometer trend
- Rising: often associated with improving or high-pressure conditions.
- Falling: may signal approaching low pressure or deteriorating weather.
- Rapid change: pay close attention; a front or storm may be approaching.
Cloud clues
- Cumulonimbus: towering cloud associated with thunderstorms.
- Cirrus: high, wispy cloud that can precede a weather change.
- Proceed at a safe speed for the conditions.
- Post a dedicated lookout and listen carefully.
- Use available navigation equipment and monitor sound signals.
Emergency Procedures
Slow the situation down: protect people, stabilize the boat, then solve the problem.
Preparation turns an emergency response into a practiced sequence rather than a guess.
Hypothermia
Watch for shivering, confusion, apathy, and declining consciousness. Remove wet clothing when safe, insulate and warm gradually, and seek medical help. In the water, use the HELP position when wearing a PFD.
Fire extinguisher: PASS
Pull the pin · Aim at the base · Squeeze the handle · Sweep side to side.
Engine failure
Fuel problems are common. Check the fuel level, filters, shutoffs, and signs of water or air in the fuel system as appropriate for the engine.
Fouled propeller
If a line is caught in the propeller, stop the engine immediately. Prevent further damage and do not enter the water unless conditions and procedures make it safe.
After grounding
- Stop the boat and lower or control the sails.
- Check for injuries, leaks, and water ingress.
- Sound the depth around the boat.
- Determine whether water level is rising or falling.
- Check for structural and steering damage.
- Decide whether a safe self-recovery is possible or assistance is needed.
Essential Knots
Tie each knot from memory and explain where it should—and should not—be used.
A useful knot is secure for its intended job, can be inspected quickly, and can usually be untied after loading.
Figure eight
A stopper knot that helps keep a line from running through a block or fairlead.
Bowline
Creates a fixed loop at the end of a line; widely used aboard for many non-slipping loop applications.
Clove hitch
Useful for temporary attachment to a piling or rail. It can slip or bind, so evaluate the load and add security when needed.
Reef knot
Joins two ends of similar line for light-duty binding. Do not rely on it for critical or heavy loads.
Round turn with two half hitches
Secures a line around a piling, post, or ring. The round turn takes much of the load while the half hitches secure the line.
