Checklist Before You Set Sail

Everything needs maintenance. It is essential to check your sailboat and make sure you have a set of spare parts before you cast away. The following is a checklist that you need to do or have before you set sail

Sailing List

  1. It is important to check the location and condition of Thru-Hull fittings. Also check of the seacocks are operating properly. Check if the Thru-Hull plus are attached to each seacock. Make sure you have two or three spare hose clamps on board in case of an emergency.
  2. Check Bilge pump and make sure they are operational. make sure they are Clean and Dry. Bilges Are Clean and Dry.
  3. Check the rails, grab the stations and make sure life lines are in good condition.
  4. Engine Check
  5. Engine Warning Lights and Alarms Working. Check the Emergency Stopping of a Runaway Engine
  6. Check Steering and Shift Mechanisms in Good Condition
  7. Make sure you have Sufficient Amount of Fuel
  8. Make sure your Fuel System Free of Leaks
  9. Check the cooling system. The Cooling Water is Full
  10. Check the Belt by checking the Belt Tension Correct and in Good Condition
  11. Safety Equipment Has Not Expired
  12. Is Your VHF Working
  13. Life Jacket Suitable for Each Person on Board
  14. Fire Extinguishers Are In-Date
  15. Heads Flushing Or Pumping
  16. Ensuring your signal flares and other signaling devices are useable and in-date is extremely important.
  17. Make sure you have man overboard Equipment and Throwable Flotation are in good condition.
  18. Make sure you have Flashlight with Extra Batteries
  19. Signal Flares And Other Signaling Devices
  20. You must have a horn on board.
  21. First Aid Kit is a must and make sure that the supplies are UpToDate such as medicine.
  22. Make sure you have enough water on board for everyone.
  23. Don’t forget Propane Gas

  25. Are water tanks full?
  26. Plenty of food enough for anyone on board for your trip
