How to clean a
raw water strainer.
A clogged sea strainer can interrupt the cooling water your generator or marine air conditioner needs. Use this practical six-step guide to clean the basket, remove sand and restore safe water flow.

Close the water
before you open
the strainer.
Turn the generator or A/C system off and fully close the correct seacock. Never remove a sea-strainer cap while its intake seacock is open.
- Identify the correct intake and valve.
- Confirm the equipment cannot start unexpectedly.
- Keep the seacock closed until the cap and drain plug are secure.
- Stop if the valve is seized, damaged or will not fully close.
Cooling water is
a system lifeline.
A strainer protects pumps and heat exchangers by catching debris before it travels through the raw-water circuit. That basket also becomes a restriction when it is neglected.
Protect the raw-water pump and impeller
A clogged basket can starve the pump of seawater. The rubber impeller may run dry, fail and leave the generator without adequate cooling.
Prevent low-flow shutdowns
Restricted seawater flow reduces heat removal from a marine air-conditioning system and can produce a high-pressure shutdown or fault.

Work in order. Closing the seacock first and checking the assembly before restart are the two safety boundaries that protect both the boat and its equipment.

Stop the equipment and close the seacock
Switch off the generator or air-conditioning system. Locate the correct raw-water intake seacock and move its handle to the fully closed position before opening the strainer.

Remove the cap by hand
Unscrew the plastic cap by hand. On this style of Groco strainer, an O-ring makes the seal, so the cap is intended to be hand-tight rather than forced with pliers or a deck key.

Lift, inspect and rinse the basket
Pull the basket straight out. Remove grass, shells and other debris, then rinse it with fresh water. Look into the bottom of the bowl for sand or sediment, especially after visiting a sandbar.

Flush accumulated sand
If sediment remains in the bowl, remove the small drain plug and flush the sand out with fresh water. Catch the discharge so the bilge stays as dry and clean as practical.

Reseat the basket and thread the cap carefully
Place the clean basket fully and evenly into the bowl. Start the plastic cap gently on the bronze threads. It should turn smoothly; back it off and restart if it feels crooked or begins to bind.

Open the seacock and verify the system
Reinstall the drain plug, reopen the seacock and inspect the cap, bowl, drain plug and hose clamps for leaks. Restart the equipment only when everything is secure, then confirm normal cooling-water flow.
Trace the restriction
without creating a leak.
Grass can become trapped below the strainer in the intake hose. If the basket is clean but water flow is still missing, shut the equipment down and close the seacock before checking anything downstream.

Protect the pump
Do not keep running a generator or A/C pump without normal raw-water flow.
Escalate safely
Disconnect a hose only with the seacock closed and only if you can control the opening safely.
Inspect more than
the basket.
The few minutes spent around the strainer can reveal early signs of sediment, loose electrical bonding or an intake restriction.
Sand in the bowl
Sand can prevent the basket from sitting flush. Use the drain plug and fresh water to remove sediment rather than forcing the basket down.
A/C chemical treatment
Some boat owners use bromine to discourage marine growth. Use it only when every affected manufacturer approves the treatment and dosage.
Bonding wires
Inspect green bonding conductors attached to bronze strainers. If a wire is loose, broken or badly corroded, have the bonding system evaluated rather than altering it casually.
The model shown uses O-ring seals, a non-metallic cap, a sight glass, a drain plug and a removable basket. Those features support tool-free routine access, but the exact service procedure still depends on the model and installation.

A deliberate sequence is safer than rushing to clear a clog. Protect the boat first, then troubleshoot the equipment.
How often should I check a boat sea strainer?
Check it regularly and whenever cooling-water flow appears reduced. Debris, weed growth, recent sandbar use and local water conditions can require more frequent inspections. Follow the equipment and strainer manufacturers’ maintenance schedules for your installation.
What can happen when a raw water strainer is clogged?
Restricted flow can starve a generator’s raw-water pump, damage its rubber impeller and allow the generator to overheat. Reduced seawater flow can also cause a marine air-conditioning system to shut down with a high-pressure fault.
Why is the basket clean but there is still no water flow?
Grass or debris may be trapped in the intake hose below the strainer. A closed seacock, damaged pump impeller, air leak or another restriction can also interrupt flow. Shut the equipment down and close the seacock before disconnecting anything; use a qualified technician when the cause is uncertain.
Can I use pliers to tighten the strainer cap?
Not on a hand-tight O-ring cap. Tools can damage the plastic cap or threads. Confirm the correct procedure in the manual for your exact strainer model.
Should I place bromine tablets in an A/C strainer?
Some boat owners use bromine to reduce marine growth in air-conditioning lines. Only use a chemical treatment when the air-conditioning, pump, hose and strainer manufacturers approve the product and dosage for that system. Do not improvise a concentration from swimming-pool use.
What should I do if the strainer leaks after cleaning?
Turn the equipment off and close the seacock. Confirm that the basket is seated, the cap is threaded correctly, the drain plug is secure and the O-ring is clean, undamaged and correctly positioned. Do not operate the system until the leak is corrected.
