What Do I Bring To the Sailboat?

Please Bring The Following Gear For Your Comfort:

  • Your textbook: Study guides and other materials (log book)  I will send them by mail
  • We break for lunch on the boat on the water. Please bring your lunch.
  • You need to stay hydrated when out on the water all day so please bring your own bottle of water. 
  • Deck shoes (rubber sole, non-marking) NO FLIP FLOPS!
  • Layer up-it may be chilly in the morning and hot in the afternoon so dress to peel off the layers. 
  • Foul-Weather Gear if needed
  • Sun screen, Chapstick if you wish.
  • Sunglasses with Glasses strap
  • Glasses strap if you have glasses
  • Sun hat preferably with a strap or baseball cap
  • Sailing gloves
  • Personal Floatation Devices (PFD)
  • Motion sickness medication (bonine is an OTC)- Bring your own (Please take one hour before going on the boat)
  • Hand Sanitizer

Our boats are equipped with PFDs and all safety gear but if you have your own PFD please bring it with you. When you wear a PDF, it should be buckled up all the time.

What If I Fail A Class?

If You Fail Practical Test And You Pass The Written Test, Practice more and come back for a test. to take the practical test, Test Fee is $100

If You Fail Written Test And Pass The Practical Test

Take a break and study hard. Come back within a month and take the written test. You get only one more chance for the test. Test Fee is $25

If You Fail Both Practical Test And Written Test.

Take a break and study hard. Come back within a month and take the written test. You get only one more chance for the test. Practice more and come back to take the practical test. Test Fee is $125

Upon Your Arrival: When you pull up to the guard shack please let them know you are with Lake St. Clair Sailing School. The sailing school is located just to the left of the guard shack. Please park in front of the marina office or along the seawall by the flag.

Are gratuities expected by Captains?

Of course gratuities are at your discretion, however, it is customary to trip your captain 15% -20% if the class is properly completed. In cases of outstanding efforts, tips of 15% or more are not unusual.

Health and Safety Policy

  • Cockpit area is an open area and is considered low risk.
  • Masks should be worn while inside sailboat cabin and head areas.
  • CDC recommends that people wear cloth face coverings in public settings and when around people who don’t live in your household, especially when other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain.
