Why get a captain’s license?
A captain’s license is required for anyone who wants to operate a vessel for hire, such as a charter boat or ferry. It is also required for anyone who wants to work as a professional captain on a commercial vessel. A captain’s license demonstrates that the holder has the knowledge and experience necessary to safely operate a vessel and is legally qualified to do so.
When Do I Need a Captain’s License?
The USCG license isn’t always required. If you are wondering, “What length of boat requires a captain’s license?”
The answer is this: If your vessel is less than 26 feet in length and doesn’t require a mate, then you may be exempt from having a captain’s license. However, if your vessel is 26 feet or longer, you will need a captain’s license. Additionally, if you are operating a vessel for hire, such as a charter boat, you will need a captain’s license regardless of the vessel’s length.
