Your Sailing Journey: A Roadmap to ASA Certification at Lake St. Clair Sailing School

Introduction: Charting Your Course to Confidence

Have you ever dreamed of sailing? Perhaps you envision yourself chartering a sailboat in the Caribbean, or maybe you hope to purchase your own boat and set sail for new horizons. Whatever your dream, achieving it begins with building skill and confidence on the water. The American Sailing Association (ASA) provides a structured, internationally recognized pathway to get you there, and we are proud to be an affiliated school.

The purpose of this document is to provide a clear, step-by-step roadmap of the ASA certifications available here at Lake St. Clair Sailing School. It will show you how each course progressively builds your competence, taking you from your very first day at the helm to advanced offshore adventures and even professional certification.

1. The Foundation: Your First Certification

1.1. ASA 101: Basic Keelboat Sailing

ASA 101 is the essential first step for any new sailor. This course is designed for the absolute beginner—no previous experience is required. Its core purpose is to build a strong foundation of fundamental skills and knowledge, ensuring you can confidently and safely skipper a keelboat up to 30 feet long.

  • Primary Goal: To learn the fundamentals of sailing, from terminology and sail theory to safety procedures, basic chart work, and rules of the road.
  • Duration: Two days, from 10am to 4pm.
  • Price: $545.
  • Prerequisite: None.
  • Required Reading: Sailing Made Easy. We strongly recommend booking your class at least two weeks in advance to give you ample time to read the material before your hands-on training begins.

Once you have mastered the fundamentals of making a boat sail, the next step is to look beyond the harbor and prepare for journeys along the coast.

2. Expanding Your Skills: From Lake to Coast

2.1. ASA 103: Coastal Cruising

ASA 103 is the logical next step after mastering the basics. This course builds directly on the skills learned in ASA 101, preparing you to handle a larger auxiliary sailing yacht during daylight hours in coastal waters. You will move from the core principles of sailing to the practical realities of cruising. The price for this course is $595.

2.3. An Accelerated Path: The Combo Class

For students ready for an intensive experience, we offer the ASA 101 & ASA 103 Combo Class. This option provides significant value by combining both certifications into a single, two-day course (9am – 5pm). At $1100, it saves you both time and money compared to taking the courses separately.

With new certifications in hand, the most important step is to reinforce what you’ve learned with dedicated time on the water.

3. Honing Your Craft: Practice and Reinforcement

Earning a certification is just the beginning. We provide structured opportunities to turn classroom knowledge into instinctual skill on the water. True confidence and mastery are built through consistent, hands-on practice, and we are here to support that journey.

3.1. Options for Practice

  • Student Sailing Practice: This is a weekly session held every Friday from 6 pm to 9 pm, designed specifically for ASA 101 grads. In a supportive, small-group environment, you will master key maneuvers like tacking, jibing, and man overboard recovery, building the confidence and control you need on the water.
  • Sailing Refresher Course: This option is for any certified sailor who feels their skills could use a little polish. Whether you’ve been off the water for a season or just want to sharpen your technique, you can join any class of your choice at 50% off! To reserve your spot, contact Captain Rene at lscsailing@gmail.com.

“I had a great time in ASA101/103. Big learning curve, but Capt Ranam did a great job with the lessons, including going back and spending extra time on areas need extra attention. There was plenty of hands-on at all the different stations… I learned a lot and am looking forward to ASA104 next year.” – Robert Student

As your hands-on skills become refined, you can begin adding the specialized knowledge required for more advanced adventures.
