This guide simplifies using the toilet on a boat, also known as the “head.”

This guide simplifies using the toilet on a boat, also known as the “head.”

Types of Toilets:

  • Electric: Push buttons for flushing and filling the bowl. Easy to use.
  • Manual: Requires a hand pump and a switch to control water flow.

How to Flush a Marine Toilet:

  1. Fill: Regardless of the type, fill the bowl with water first (usually by flipping a switch).
  2. Use the Toilet
  3. Flush:
    • Electric: Press the flush button.
    • Manual: Pump the handle repeatedly until the bowl is empty (10 pumps is typical).
  4. Empty the Holding Tank: This is usually done at designated pump-out stations, not by the user.

What NOT to Flush:

  • Toilet paper (use a separate wastebasket)
  • Pads, tampons, wipes, tissues
  • Food scraps

Other Important Tips:

  • Heeling and Valves: When the boat leans excessively (heeling), close the valves to prevent leaks. Ask about valve locations during check-in.
  • Clogged Toilets: If the toilet won’t flush, check if the valves are closed. For blockages, you may need to wait for natural breakdown or contact a mechanic.
  • Water Source: The flushing water may come from the sea (unlimited) or a freshwater tank (use sparingly). Ask about refilling procedures.
  • Marina Facilities: Whenever possible, use restrooms and showers at the marina.
  • Respecting the Environment: Avoid urinating overboard near the coast.
  • Boat Etiquette: Be mindful of noise traveling through thin walls on a boat.

Additional Information:

  • This guide is not a substitute for instructions provided during your boat charter.
  • Renting a newer boat increases the chance of having an electric toilet.
