ASA 104, Bareboat Cruising

Take your charter experience to the next level! If you’ve completed ASA 101 and ASA 103, and have at least six on-the-water days under your belt, you’re ready to take ASA 104 Bareboat Cruising. This course will prepare you for international charter vacations and overnights. Among the many essential yachting skills taught, students will complete the course with in-depth knowledge of trip planning, night sailing, and boat systems.

Sailing Skills Taught in ASA 104 Bareboat Cruising

The ASA 104 Course curriculum elaborates on skills taught on ASA 101 and 103 while introducing essential skills necessary for overnight and multiday charters. Topics of instruction include: 

  • Knowledge of provisioning and galley operations
  • Boat systems – electrical, mechanical, and plumbing
  • Auxiliary engine operation
  • Routine maintenance procedures
  • Advanced sail trim
  • Coastal navigation including basic chart plotting and GPS operation
  • Multiple-anchor, mooring and docking techniques
  • Crew health, safety, and emergency operations
  •  Weather interpretation
  • Night Sailing
  • Close-quarters maneuvering with large monohulls

Additional knowledge and skills for coastal cruising in an auxiliary powered sailboat. Subjects include cruise planning, living aboard, wind and weather, boat systems and troubleshooting, docking, rafting, anchoring, chart reading and interpretation, extensive sailing drills and practice, knots and more.

Able to skipper a sloop-rigged, auxiliary powered keelboat of approximately 30 to 45 feet in length during a multi-day cruise upon inland or coastal waters in moderate to heavy winds (up to 30 knots) and sea conditions. Knowledge of provisioning, galley operations, boat systems, auxiliary engine operation, routine maintenance procedures, advanced sail trim, coastal navigation including basic chart plotting and GPS operation, multiple-anchor mooring, docking, health & safety, emergency operations, weather interpretation, and dinghy/tender operation.
