Spring Sailboat Commissioning
Spring is here, and it’s time to get your boat ready for the season! While tasks like sanding, painting, and checking the fuel system are important, don’t forget about your rigging. Here are some key maintenance tips to ensure your boat’s stability and safety:
Annual Rigging Maintenance:
- Inspect Connections: Carefully examine swage fittings for cracks and heavy rust (a little discoloration is okay). Look for “fishhooks” (bent strands) and rust on wire halyards and running backstays.
- Lubricate Turnbuckles: Remove tape from turnbuckles, then lubricate the threads with a Teflon-based product. Replace old tape with fresh, ensuring water can drain freely.
- Check Chainplates: If you suspect moisture around a chainplate, remove it for inspection and any necessary repairs.
- Inspect Sheaves and Blocks: Make sure all masthead sheaves and blocks are running smoothly.
Additional Spring Commissioning Tips from a Local Expert:
Before Launch (on land):
- Battery Check: Ensure batteries are fully charged.
- Shaft and Rudder: Inspect seals and service or repack as needed.
- Cutless Bearing: Check for play and replace if necessary.
- Propeller: Grease if applicable (Maxprop).
- Seacocks and Hoses: Verify proper operation and check the condition of connected hoses and clamps.
- Speed Transducer: Clean and paint the paddle wheel.
- Bottom Maintenance: Apply bottom paint, anodes, and Propspeed (if applicable).
- Hull Cleaning: Wash and wax the hull.
- Shore Power and Lines: Check shore cords and connectors for damage. Replace as needed.
- Dock Lines and Fenders: Inspect and replace any worn lines or fenders.
After Launch:
- System Commissioning: Re-commission any winterized systems, checking for leaks caused by freezing.
- Fresh Water System: Thoroughly purge antifreeze from tanks and plumbing. Consider adding a water conditioner.
- Fluid Check: Verify fluid levels before starting the engine or generator.
- Running Rigging: Inspect the condition of all running rigging.
- Windlass: Test the operation of the windlass.
By following these tips, you can ensure your boat’s rigging is in top shape and ready for a safe and enjoyable boating season!
